The team at Hannells are celebrating as the Derby based, family-run estate agency reaches its 20th anniversary since first opening their doors back in 2003…
Joint founders Alison & Michael Brain, who still run the independent business to this day, launched Hannells with no prior estate agency experience after they had found themselves on the receiving end of a poor service whilst trying to sell their own property.
With their fresh approach to estate agency, hard-work and determination, Michael and Alison quickly carved out an impressive share of the local market, starting out from a small but cosy office on the main road in the Derby suburb of Hilton.
Since then, the business has grown from strength to strength becoming an established and well-recognised brand in Derbyshire and a well-known player in the property industry after winning several, highly regarded industry awards.
Michael Brain, joint Founding Director, said “We knew we were onto something when we first started because of the amazing response we received from local sellers, but I don’t think either myself or Alison, my business partner, could have anticipated what Hannells would become, what the brand stands for today and the rollercoaster ride of a journey it’s been. I couldn’t be prouder of the team that we’ve built and the fact that twenty years later, we’re still an independent, family-run business that echoes the exact same values we worked so hard to instil in business from day one.”
Today, Hannells operates solely out of Derby and the surrounding suburbs with six local, residential sales branches placed strategically throughout the city supported by a central lettings branch which currently manages a portfolio of over 650 properties.
With a focus on “traditional” estate agency the business prides itself on its customer service having won a number of highly coveted industry awards over the years including being named the national runner up in the 2022 allAgents awards and being crowned as best residential estate agency in the UK at the 2019 EA Masters Awards.

The team celebrated their anniversary on the evening of Friday 3rd with a birthday bash held at Seven Bar and restaurant where they were joined by staff and suppliers and treated to a night of entertainment with a disco hosted by DJ Austin Powers, a luxury buffet and plenty of refreshments!
To honour the brilliant business milestone, Hannells have launched a one-of-a-kind, monthly prize draw where every month for the next 10 months, they’ll be picking two of their customers’ names out of a hat – who will get to sell their property for free.
