Hannells, which has branches across Derby, has agreed to support the Treats Children Charity, which provides deserving youngsters treats such as gifts, holidays and trips away.
The charity was founded 28 years ago by a group of nine women, who all live in Derbyshire. Each year, they organise a range of fund-raising activities in and around Derby – from lunches to golf days. They also hold a glitzy annual ball which over the years has become a big event on the local social calendar.
It was at this year’s ball that Mike Brain, who runs Hannells, first heard about the work of the Treats Children’s Charity. He was asked to be auctioneer at a charity auction that was held during the event.
Mr Brain said: “That night was the first time I had come into contact with the charity and the incredible work that it does. “Every year we like to donate a portion of our profits to charity and I was looking for a local cause that directly benefited people in the county. “Treats Children’s Charity seemed to fit the bill perfectly.”
Since it was founded, the charity has raised hundreds of thousands of pounds. The idea on which it was founded – to help send children from deprived areas on trips or holidays – is still very much at its heart. But over the years, Treats has also helped fund a number of community projects and special items that benefit children. These have included minibuses, medical equipment, specially developed bikes and wheelchairs.
Yesterday, Mr Brain set the ball rolling for Treats with a £5,000 donation. He presented the cheque to Elaine Blount, who is chairman of the charity and her daughter, Vicky Ashton, who is vice-chairman. Mrs Blount said: “We’re absolutely thrilled that Mike has decided to support us. “We’re not a big national charity, so every donation we receive is important. We make sure every £1 is spent locally, making a real difference and bringing a smile to the faces of local children who deserve it.”
Vicky Ashton, from the charity, said: “Thanks to the generosity of local individuals and companies like Hannells we have donated funds to many needy causes. “We are always open to requests for help and will look at anything that can benefit the lives of these special children.”
