Sam recently took part in a charity Bowls tournament to raise money for Ashgate Hospice in Chesterfield. Ashgate Hospicecare is an independent registered charity that provides specialist palliative and end of life care and support to adults and their families across North Derbyshire.
Here’s Sam’s write up from the day:
On the longest day of the year, hidden away in the Derbyshire hills, a group of blurry eyed bowls bowlers set foot on the bowling green just as morning broke and began a fifteen hour marathon of non-stop bowling. With a variety of age groups, techniques and skills the bowlers played a variety of traditional and impromptu games of bowls, all in the name of charity.
The aim was to ensure at least two members of the club were on the green at any one time and although the early slots were a little difficult in fill, by the time the sun was shining and the bacon cobs had been served a good number of participants had joined in.
The weather was kind, the BBQ was well stocked and the charity buckets were jangling with locals and passing tourists all stopping to see how the game is played.
Although no clear winner appeared (most games continuing much further than the traditional 21 points require for a win) as the final rays disappeared and dusk began to settle the day was declared over. Although there were no casualties there were plenty of sore arms, knees and the odd ego.
At the moment the totals are being counted up and donations are still pouring in. So far around £400 has been collected and we are hoping the total will hit the £800 mark with a week or so. The charity accepting the donations is Ashgate Hospice in Chesterfield.
Congratulations from all the Team at Hannells Sam!
